Found this recipe in Pamela Druckerman’s Bringing Up Bébé: One American Mother Discovers the Wisdom of French Parenting, one of my favorite books on parenting. Can’t wait to try making it sometime! I think I would use greek yogurt and maybe add some lemon zest or guava jam.

Yogurt Cake (gâteau au yaourt)

Ingredients
2 (6oz) containers of plain yogurt (keep containers for measuring the other ingredients)
2 eggs
2 containers sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1 container of vegetable oil
4 containers flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1 container mini chocolate chips or 2 containers of frozen berries (optional)
Crème fraîche (optional)
powdered sugar (optional)

Instructions

Make this not-very-sweet but light and very forgiving recipe in the morning with your child and serve in the afternoon to help them learn how to do things on their own and how to be patient.

Preheat the oven to 375 F

Coat a loaf pan or 9” round cake pan with cooking spray or oil.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the yogurt, eggs, sugar, vanilla, and oil.

In a separate bowl, combine the flour and baking powder.

Add the dry mixture to the wet mixture, stir until just combined. You can now add the chocolate chips or berries if using them.

Scoop it all into your baking pan, bake for 35-45 minutes or until golden and the cake springs up when touched (or when it passes the knife test). Let it cool on a rack.

Dust with powdered sugar (optional) and/or serve with the Crème fraîche (optional) with afternoon tea.

This might be the cutest design concept I’ve seen for a newborn crib.

It’s made of coated acrylic plastic with a buckwheat hull mattress and soft wool mat cover. It can rock on all sides, but returns to the upright position with a plexiglas weight center.

Nutella Espresso Mug Cake with Fresh Raspberries

4 tbsp flour
3 tbsp sugar
1 tsp espresso powder or instant coffee (I used Starbucks VIA Extra Bold)
1 egg
3 tbsp cocoa powder
3 tbsp Nutella
3 tbsp milk
2 tbsp vegetable oil
Pinch of salt
Whipped cream
Fresh raspberries (or strawberries, blueberries, etc)

1. In a regular sized coffee mug (10oz), add egg and whisk lightly with a fork. Add milk, salt, espresso powder, sugar, cocoa, and oil to the mug. Mix well.

2. Add the Nutella and mix very well.

3. Fold the flour in carefully with a fork. Be careful not to overmix, to ensure a smooth fluffy texture.

4. Microwave on high for 3 minutes.

5. Allow to cool, and top with whipped cream and raspberries.

Gotta love Michelle Obama’s household rules, a few of which were compiled for a New York Times article on the Obama girls:

When the girls go on trips, they write reports on what they have seen, even if their school does not require it.
Technology is for weekends. Malia can use her cellphone only then, and she and her sister cannot watch television or use a computer for anything but homework during the week.
Malia and Sasha had to take up two sports: one they chose and one selected by their mother. “I want them to understand what it feels like to do something you don’t like and to improve,” the first lady has said.
Malia must learn to do laundry before she leaves for college.
The girls have to eat their vegetables, and if they say that they are not hungry, they cannot ask for cookies or chips later. “If you’re full, you’re full,” Mrs. Obama said in an interview with Ladies’ Home Journal. “I don’t want to see you in the kitchen after that.”

Maybe she’ll publish a parenting book for us new moms when she leaves office?
